Conservationists and Wild-Life Enthusiasts Celebrate Earth Day in Historic Clearwater Bank Building

On Friday April 22nd, local conservationists, wildlife enthusiasts, and earth-conscious members of the community will celebrate Earth Day in the historic downtown Clearwater Bank Building now the home of the Scientology Information Center.

Earth Day began 47 years ago. After witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, (then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin) proposed a national day to focus on environmental protection.

Inspired by the student anti-war movement, Senator Nelson realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. Senator Nelson recruited Denis Hayes from Harvard as national coordinator. Hayes promoted events across the land which will be held on April 22, falling between Spring Break and Final Exams.

"The idea that one has a share in the planet and that one can and should help take care for it may seem very large and, to some, quite beyond reality. But today what happens on the other side of the world, even so far away, can effect what happens in your own home," wrote Mr. L. Ron Hubbard, horticulturist, humanitarian and Church of Scientology founder. In the spirit of those words, the Scientology Information Center will be honoring those who make it their concern to protect the Earth and wildlife 365 days a year.

Environmentalists will discuss initiatives being taken to support the environment.

"Earth is a beautiful place that we can't take for granted. Unless we care for it, we might lose it," stated Amber Skjelset, Manager Scientology Information Center, "With that in mind the Church of Scientology acknowledges those who are doing something to help improve our planet."

The event which is scheduled from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm will also include live piano and hors d’oeuvres.
